A Story About Staying Strong When Your Body Needs Help
Pages 1–8 · Read FreeMichael was a busy dad. He drove fast cars, fixed engines in his garage, and always made time to walk his son to school. He smiled a lot. He worked hard. From the outside, everything looked just fine.
But on the inside, Michael's body was trying to tell him something.
He started feeling tired in a way that sleep couldn't fix. His ankles puffed up like water balloons. Climbing stairs left him out of breath before he reached the top. Michael told himself he just needed more rest. He didn't know yet that his kidneys — two little bean-shaped organs that clean your blood — were working too hard and slowly running out of strength.
One morning, his son looked up at his dad and said, "Dad, you don't look good. You should see the doctor." He was only nine years old, but he was paying close attention. Sometimes the people who love us most see things before we do.
Michael went to the doctor. The doctor ran tests and sat down with Michael to explain what was happening. "Your kidneys need help," the doctor said, gently. "We have a special machine that can do some of their work for them. It's called a dialysis machine, and it cleans your blood three times a week." Michael listened carefully. He had a lot of questions. So did his son.
"Is it going to hurt?" his son asked when Michael told him the news at home that night. Michael pulled his son close. "A little sometimes," Michael said honestly. "But I'm going to be okay. The machine is like a special helper that cleans my blood while my kidneys rest. And you know what? I'm a lot tougher than I look." His son laughed a little. Michael did too. That night, they decided they would face it together — as a family. And together, they were going to be just fine.
The rest of Michael's Big Kidney Journey shows how Michael and his whole family faced the challenge together — with courage, love, and a little humor. Available on Amazon in Kindle and paperback.
